A Public Service Announcement

Filed under: grad school, knitting — Marie @ 10:58 am

Better late than never, I always say. After vastly underestimating how long it would take, my second draft of my thesis is done and has been sent to my advisers. I did this Friday night/Saturday morning (no need to email professors at 1 AM; even if they are up, they’re not *that* eager to read my thesis) and spent the rest of the weekend doing nothing much in particular. And now we are back to our regularly scheduled knitting and talking about knitting.

lucky-detail.jpgI’ve been meaning to write something about the lace pattern on lucky for some time now and now I have my chance. I realized I wrote something very misleading about the lace a few entries back and would like to correct it, in case some unsuspecting knitting newbie comes across the entry via a google search and (gasp) thinks I know what I’m talking about. Now, because of the increases and decreases on lucky, a newbie like myself might think “Hmm, to knit another clover right on the edge, or not?” What I ended up doing was usually leaving the clovers off if they were too close to the edge, as you can see in the picture here, but in the entry I made it sound like I was moving the clovers around and messing with their staggered arrangement. No sirre, Bob, you don’t want to do that! In the comments for that entry the designer also chimed in that if you follow the pattern, you may end up with “half” clovers or clover pieces on the edge. But it seems like the beauty of the pattern is that you can adapt it and knit it however you like! I didn’t follow the instructions exactly, but it still looks quite nice, if I say so myself!

lucky-back.jpgWhew – I’m glad I got that off my chest! I’ve been making progress on lucky, but it has slowed down somewhat now so that I can meet the deadline for my Sockapalooza socks (pictures soon!). It would have been perfect if I could wear lucky for St. Patrick’s Day, but I’ll get my chance next year. So far I’ve finished the back and left front pieces and I’m about an inch into the right front. I don’t remember exactly how far along I was when the Olympics ended, but I think I was pretty close to finishing the left front. Along the way I’ve made some minor adjustments to the pattern: I’ve made all of the pieces just over an inch longer before starting waist shaping. I’m pretty tall and tend to have a longer torso than most people, so I might just try making all the sweaters I knit a little longer. Then maybe I can avoid the peeking belly-button syndrome I’ve suffered from in the past.

left-front.jpgHere’s on last picture in order to give you a better idea of the actual color of the yarn. I certainly seem to be knitting with a lot of green yarn lately, but it certainly fits my mood for spring right now. Now if only the weather would cooperate with my mood as well…
